In our role play section we have been enjoying setting up our very own preschool florist. The children used various pots, ribbons, crepe paper and flowers to create their bouquets to sell in their florist shop. They set up an order area where the children answered the phones and wrote down the orders on their clipboards before passing it to the florists in the shop area. We had some lovely arrangements!
On Tuesday we took a walk around the wildlife garden area and collected some of the wild flowers. After laying them down on a presentation sheet we sandwiched them between another sheet of paper and set them up underneath our brick trays. We are patiently waiting for a few weeks to see the end result of our pressed flowers.
This week we have also been investigating bees, looking at why we need bees and what bee keepers do. We were lucky enough to see first-hand what a bee keeper suit looks like as well as the wax frames used to capture the honey. For our craft we have been making pine cone bees to add to our play room display.
We have enjoyed playing with our Bee-bot this week, working on programming directions in to travel across our dinosaur jungle mat. The older children showed great perseverance in working with the Bee-bot to create a sequence of instructions for it to follow.
At the end of the week we started to sow our sunflower seeds, this year we have chosen a variety called Van Gogh, so hopefully we have some lovely flowers like those in the famous painting.
Next week we will be looking at caterpillars and butterflies and sharing the story The Hungry Caterpillar.
